In recent decades the Mekong region has witnessed a rapid development of large-scale hydropower projects in the name of energy security, economic growth and sustainable development. Yet do these justifications outweigh the social and environmental costs, and are these justifications even genuine?

Marika Samuelsson holds a bachelor in development studies from Lund University, where for her thesis, she conducted fieldwork on the Nam Theun 2 hydropower project in Laos. Later, she worked for the Mekong Energy and Ecology Network as a researcher and communications officer. In the fall 2016, she will commence her Master’s in Environmental Management in the UK.
